Drawing on a unique archive and hundreds of resident voices, Professor Rebecca Tunstall will trace the story of 20 estates, from the early C20th to today, including 11 in London.

Each has been viewed as a success and as a failure, at different times and by different people. Initially they offered high-quality homes but all experienced falls in quality, safety and popularity, and change in resident mix. However, what were ’11 unpopular London council estates’ in the 1980s and 1990s are today 10 fairly popular mixed tenure neighbourhoods. Trends were driven not only by the characteristics of estates themselves, but by factors from the local to the global.
