There are three levels of creativity and we seem to be stuck on the first level: reacting to problems by deriving solutions from what we know. In other art forms, we can see the difference taking creativity up a notch can make. The second level of creativity is merging two different ideas, such as jazz and rock to form jazz fusion in the 1960s, and later, jazz rap in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
A great example of the third level of creativity came in the first decade of the twentieth century. Following the incremental shifts through impressionism, expressionism and so on, Picasso, Braque and Duchamp blew apart our perception of the world to create Cubism.
Great ideas are often born during times of crisis; we need to rethink the future of living, working and playing in this new world. The spaces we inhabit should be reinvented on every level, rather than define our behaviour, an environment should be a framework for different physical states and corresponding mental states.
