Join Ian Goodfellow, Project Lead, Penoyre & Prasad for this exclusive tour of PEARL (the Person Environment Activity Research Laboratory), a new and unique purpose-built laboratory facility for the creation of full-size environments to test how people use infrastructure and cities.
PEARL’s objective is to create a world where everyone can experience an improved quality of life through better design of the environment, using an evidence-based understanding of how people interact with it. UCL’s hugely expansive work at PEARL will range from collaborative research with London Underground to make tube design more accessible, to the analysis and design of the built environment for people with dementia and beyond.
The interior laboratory is equipped with weather and sound systems to test the impact of environmental conditions such as space, colour, lighting and sound on people’s behaviour and perception, bringing experiment conditions as close to real-life scenarios as possible.
Net Zero Carbon and an EPC A+ rating is achieved through a combination of highly energy efficient building fabric and services, and a roof-wide array of solar Photovoltaic panels. The highly versatile servicing strategy delivers low energy heat and ventilation where it is needed for experiments. The acoustics of the building are also very finely controlled. Throughout the design and construction of this BREEAM Excellent building there was also a keen focus on low-impact, responsibly sourced, modular construction materials and waste minimisation as part of a ‘circular economy’ approach.
