TOUR | Brunel Museum and the Sink Shaft

Following on from the success of the London Society Summer Party, join Jerry Tate of Tate Harmer and Robert Hulse, Director of the Brunel Museum. As they describe the rich history of the buildings as well as the recent process of installing the access staircase and converting the Sinking Shaft space.

The Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe is located above and within Brunel’s Thames Tunnel and Engine House. This structure has been described as the eighth wonder and the world and was the first tunnel under a river, the first bored tunnel underground railway line and Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s first structure (after he took over from his father Marc). Opening in 1843 the Thames Tunnel was a pedestrian promenade and performance space for twenty years, before being converted into a train tunnel in 1859. Following the installation of a slab by TFL in 2008 and a new access staircase by Tate Harmer in 2016 the Sinking Shaft has now, once again, become a celebrated performance space.
