Join Dr. Dawn Pereira, Fellow at the Henry Moore Institute as she takes you on a journey of her research over the last 22 years. Focusing on the post-war sculptural works of William Mitchell (1925-2020) made for urban landscapes in London and beyond; from Liverpool to Honolulu.

Dawn’s talk for The London Society will discuss William Mitchell’s role at the London County Council as a Design Consultant (1958-65) and his commissions  for them at part of their Patronage of the Arts Scheme, including the story behind his ‘London Life’ murals designed for the Hyde Park/Marble Arch Subways (1962). Mitchell went onto an international career working with some of the foremost architects, contractors and developers of the era, yet many of his artworks can still be found tucked away in and around London today; one such example, his high-relief glass fibre panel interior created for the now listed Curzon Cinema, Mayfair (1966).

Dr Dawn Pereira, a writer, teacher and artist, is currently completing a book about London-born artist William Mitchell (1925-2020) entitled ‘The Colourful Crusade of William Mitchell’; The Integration of Architectural Sculpture into Post-War Urban Landscapes (1957-77). This was funded by a Henry Moore Post-Doctoral Fellowship and hosted by the University of East London.
