How did we get here today? This year’s Planning School sheds light on the city’s last fifty years of urban development. How did we get to where we are today, and what do we owe these various eras? Each week, we’ll explore a decade - its policies, its battles, its formative projects - from the mouths of those who know them best.
Joanna Averley on the 2000s - London had a mayor, a plan and an urban task force. Kings Cross finally got developed and all over the city we saw the start of an urban renaissance… until there was a crash.
Joanna Averley was a founding Director from 2000-2011 of CABE (the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) whose mission was to improve the quality of new buildings, space and places across England. She was involved in all aspects of CABE management and led advisory, best practice, training and campaigning work to clients relating to artists' studios to schools, public space, parks and gardens, housing and hospitals. She was seconded to be the Interim Director of Design for the London Olympic Delivery Authority in 2005 and to be part of the set up team for the Homes and Communities Agency in 2008. She is currently Strategy Manager for Growth and Development at Crossrail 2, working as part of the client team within Transport for London.
