Church Street is a neighbourhood of contrasts, home to both a bustling daily market and a high-end antiques quarter. However, it is also one of the most deprived areas in the country, struggling with social and economic challenges. In response, Westminster City Council and Jan Kattein Architects secured funding from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund to reimagine the Triangle, bridging physical and social divides through a series of thoughtful interventions.
The tour will highlight key features of the project, including the repurposed public toilet, now expanded into a café with a welcoming glazed entrance, and a formerly vacant furniture showroom transformed into a dynamic marketplace for local micro-enterprises. Learn how design elements, from exposed patchwork repairs to carefully placed glazing, celebrate the area’s history while fostering future growth.
Outside, the expanded public realm reclaims space for the community, integrating informal seating and accessible social areas, making the market a more inviting place for all. The Triangle now hosts businesses championing sustainability, circular economy initiatives, and refugee entrepreneurship.
This is a unique opportunity to witness urban regeneration in action and discuss the future of Church Street with those shaping it. Don’t miss this chance to see how design can stitch a neighbourhood back together.
